Tesla is building a lithium refinery near Corpus Christi to help produce batteries it needs to increase production of its electric cars in Texas and elsewhere.

Tesla planned to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide from the facility by year’s end for use in electric vehicles. Aerial images of the site this week suggest groundwork has been done.
“We’re basically talking about breaking ground and starting commissioning within 10 months and with actual production within 12 months,” Baglino said during an investor event at the automaker’s Texas headquarters. Tesla has been focusing on building lithium refining facilities to produce the batteries it needs to increase production of its electric cars.
It currently sells four models: the S, X, 3 and Y. It’s attempting to ramp up production at its Austin factory as well as plants in Freemont, Calif., Berlin and Shanghai.
