But Mr Dutton said Australia should have instead backed Israel and the United States by rejecting the motion entirely, saying Israel had the right to defend itself. The Gaza Health Ministry said an estimated 8,000 Palestinians, including 2,913 children, have been killed in Israeli air strikes since October 7.
"It gives a real insight into the thinking within the Labor Party and the division that exists. I think the prime minister should have picked the phone up immediately to Tony Burke, and really given him a dressing down," he said. When asked if he agreed with those labelling Israel's policies towards Palestinians as "apartheid", Mr Burke said people could reach their own conclusions but pointed towards the treatment he had seen of Palestinians in Israel before.
"Now people can reach their own conclusions about what word to apply to that, but that's how the law works there at the moment."
