TasteAtlas, a travel guide specializing in culinary experiences, has ranked Greek cuisine as the best in the world based on user ratings. The United States placed 13th, while the UK trailed behind in 48th position.
TasteAtlas has ranked the top 100 cuisines in the world -- and the burger-loving United States took a backseat to a dozen other countries.Naming the world’s best cuisine is going to be divisive — one person’s trash is another’s delicacy. However, travel guide TasteAtlas has taken a shot by analyzing ratings from users, who deemed Greek food the overall best of the top 100 cuisines on the globe.
The United States, meanwhile, placed outside the top ten in this culinary decathlon, but still fared better than our neighbors across the pond in the UK. Perhaps it’s fitting that the country that invented democracy was picked via crowdsourcing on this highly-subjective countdown. That’s right, Greece stood atop this culinary Mount Olympus, boasting a score of 4.6 out of 5 five stars.Cuisine highlights including Fystiki Aeginas (a special type of Greek pistachios), Finiki Lakonias olive oil, and Santorini Fava beans, per TasteAtlas. Coming in second was Italy (4.59), whose must-try dishes included parmesan cheese, gianduja (a sweet creamy spread of chocolate and hazelnuts of which Nutella is the most recognizable brand), and Neapolitan Pizza.Meanwhile, American cuisine placed 13th in the world (4.42), per TasteAtlas, which touted American lobster, Pacific smoked salmon and South Texas-style BBQ as the cream of the US culinary crop. And, as a big consolation, NYC legends Russ & Daughters and Keens Steakhouse were dubbed two of the must-try restaurants in the nation. The UK wasn’t so lucky, placing a dismal 48th (right behind Macedonian cuisine) with a score of 4.15.
