The region has been hit by a terrible heatwave which has seen the temperature rise to more than 50C starting wildfires
The Greek government has rolled out a series of measures to shield residents and tourists in the capital from a brutal heatwave that has already claimed the lives of at least six holidaymakers. The region is grappling with a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 50C.
The greater Athens area was placed on high alert for wildfires due to the weather forecast, leading to prohibitions on entering forests and parks. In response, the City of Athens has implemented measures to assist its citizens and visitors. According to the Keep Talking Greece website, there is no end date for these new measures, with officials predicting an exceptionally hot summer ahead. Social workers, nurses and psychologists working with the city's homeless population will be distributing water, meals, coffee and protection kits on the streets, reports the Express.
The app highlights the nearest cool spots like fountains and parks, suggests the coolest routes via shady streets, and provides updates on the city's air pollution levels. It also allows users to monitor human risk levels to ensure safety. The app is available in six languages and includes the locations of popular tourist sites and museums.
