Nine months into 2022, Greater Cleveland’s car dealerships are having the worst year for sales in recent memory.
Dealerships in Northern Ohio sold 149,404 new vehicles by the end of September, about 40,000 units short of sales ahead of the pandemic. It’s the lowest sales total seen through nine months in the last five years, according to data from the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.
Year-to-date sales are down from 189,551 in 2021 and 175,252 in 2020. In 2019 and 2018, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Northern Ohio averaged about 190,000 new vehicle sales through September. Dealerships have been plagued by inventory issues for some time now. After seeing a huge rush of vehicle sales in the second half of 2020 and first half of 2021, sales have declined.“Dealership inventories continue to improve, and while used car values are softening, the demand for vehicle trade-ins is still prevalent, making new vehicle purchases a viable option,” said Louis Vitantonio, president of the Automobile Dealers’ Association.
