Research by insurance comparison site Confused.com found more than 123,000 potholes were reported to councils in Scotland last year - a 53 per cent rise since 2020.

Glasgow's Great Western Road has been revealed as one of the 'worst roads' in Scotland for pot holes with hundreds of drivers making compensation claims.

The news follows a SmartSurvey report in February that named Glasgow as the pothole capital of the UK, with 11.7 unrepaired potholes for every 1,000 residents. The analysis, which looked at pothole reports across Scotland, England and Wales, placed Edinburgh second on the list, with 8.2 unrepaired potholes per 1,000 people.

Then in March, we reported how the council has been called to fix 185 potholes on a two mile stretch of road branded the second worst in the city. A freedom of information request has revealed the staggering number of road defects the council has been called to fix on Nitshill Road in the south of the city.

Scotland's City Region Deals Prioritize High-Carbon Road Projects, Research ClaimsScotland's City Region Deals Prioritize High-Carbon Road Projects, Research ClaimsNew research claims that Scotland's City Region Deals have prioritized high-carbon road projects, causing nearly £1billion of transport investment to be spent on them. Sustainable transport charity Transform Scotland argues that this has resulted in a missed opportunity to meet climate targets and prioritize green public transport. Despite legally-binding climate targets, 70% of the funds allocated to the City Deals have been used for road-building instead of eco schemes. The charity also criticizes investments in aviation and highlights the split funding between the Scottish and UK governments.
