High concentrations of salty water are already taking a toll on the lake’s brine shrimp, which could have ripple effects on migrating birds and local industry.

Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune The Lucine Cutoff shown on on August 27, 2002. The cutoff officially opened to rail traffic on Nov. 26, 1903. It was built to replace the original Union Pacific-Central Pacific tracks completed through Promontory in 1869. It shortened the journey from Lucine to Ogden by more than 40 miles and shaved hours off the railroad's schedule.

Those culverts, however, slowly sunk into the lake bed sediment, effectively cutting off Gunnison Bay from the rest of the lake. That’s why the hypersaline north half of the lake is a red-purple color, while the fresher south arm is blue-green.Worried about the lake’s ecosystem, as well as how to send rescue boats to the north arm, state regulators required Union Pacific to create a new breach through the causeway in 2016.

“The railroad did them a huge favor,” Luft said in an interview, “by providing the material and providing the means to get it out there.” It’s also a problem for the hundreds of thousands of birds migrating to the Great Salt Lake to gorge on its shrimp buffet. “The brine shrimp, as far as numbers go, are OK” so far, Luft said. “The only difference I’ve noticed is they acted like it was late fall in the middle of the summer. They started producing cysts earlier.”
