The Leeds MP had been in the shadow secretary role since 2023.
Hilary Benn said it is a “great honour” to be appointed as Northern Ireland Secretary as he pledged to help the region reach “its full potential”.
He takes over from the Conservatives’ Chris Heaton-Harris, who has been in the role for almost two years and did not contest the General Election. “We both agreed on the importance of close co-operation between our Governments on a range of issues related to Northern Ireland and in our role as guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement.
Mr Benn served in Gordon Brown’s government as environment secretary and was a candidate to be deputy leader of Labour in 2007.
