The UN's World Heritage Committee keeps the reef off its list of sites 'in danger', but Australia remains under pressure to show it is doing enough to protect the marine ecosystem from environmental harm.
abc.net.au/news/great-barrier-reef-kept-off-unesco-world-heritage-in-danger-list/102855638The United Nations World Heritage Committee has officially kept the Great Barrier Reef off its list of sites "in danger", but Australia remains under pressure to show it is doing enough to protect the reef from environmental harm.
The list is used to highlight places that are facing the threat of losing the unique qualities that earned them World Heritage status in the first place. Lissa Schindler from the Australian Marine Conservation Society said the reef faced "the fight of its life", with a predicted El Niño increasing the likelihood of marine heatwaves and coral bleaching.
