NSTopinion Malaysia has chosenagreat theme as this year's Apec host, but there could be a joker-in-the-pack, writes Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid
While it is not often US presidents visit Malaysia, this would be one time we Malaysians will not be too enamoured of the presence, should it happen.
On top of that it is unclear to say the least what the American position would be on optimising human potential and shared prosperity — the theme Malaysia proposes to have adopted by Apec going forward. Trump has never spoken about optimising human potential that I can recall. Nevertheless there is a huge need for well-planned Malaysian diplomatic effort to get the buy-in for Malaysia’s Apec Post-2020 Vision on “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Future of Shared Prosperity” — including from the Americans.
There has to be a ready plan. Just as there has to be a plan to ensure Trump, should he attend, and however difficult he may be, does not cause dissension at Apec 2020. Isolating him should not be Plan A. It is a matter also of interest to the Malaysian people. Shared prosperity 2030 is the core national agenda, and making it a transnational objective as well could bring benefits such as the sharing of technology to achieve ends like financial inclusion and affordable healthcare.
This is not Miti’s responsibility alone, but that of the whole government. The 2020 Budget provides good signposts to realisation of human potential.
