While the Salt Lake Occidentals baseball team had a successful run in the sport during the late 1800s to early 1900s, there came a point where the team fell apa
rt."Everything was stacked against them when it came to baseball. It’s the reason why the Assembly and the Occidentals teams were the only teams in Utah at the time," said Chris Hansen , local independent baseball historian.Black baseball teams like the Salt Lake Occidentals were part of the building blocks to reach a milestone in history where the sport would become integrated. There came a point in time when the Occidentals baseball team started to crumble.
With the Salt Lake Occidentals slowly disappearing from the baseball scene, the memories of them started to fade away and quietly rest in old newspapers collecting dust. "Frank Black’s gravesite at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salt Lake. . . . One of the only men that played for the Assembly Club or the Occidentals who was actually buried in Utah," Hansen said. "So I think that’s a pretty important site."
“He started out with the team, and he was a manager, he was a player. He was involved with bringing boxers to Utah," Hansen said.As Hansen continued his research, he found that Utah’s Black baseball teams didn’t end with the Salt Lake Occidentals.
