Forecasters say numerous showers accompanied by a few rumbles of thunder may produce small hail and/or graupel Friday.

National Severe Storms Laboratory, are soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets — at a temperature below 32 degrees — freeze onto a snow crystal. The snow crystals are generally less than 0.2 inches in diameter and disintegrate when handled.

Graupel is made possible by the unseasonably chilly air that's settled into the southwestern and central Ohio regions. Hail, on the other hand, must be at least 0.2 inches in size and comes in a variety of shapes, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory. "Hailstones begin as embryos, which include graupel or sleet, and then grow in size," the laboratory indicates, adding that hail forms through the"collection of water that freezes onto the hailstone’s surface."

[5:25 AM] Today... well... today is not going to be a nice day to be outside. Numerous showers, with a few rumbles of thunder, small hail and/or graupel are expected throughout the day today. Don't worry though, the snow will hold off until later tonight.
