The city of Dallas is helping renovate the historic Forest Theater in South Dallas with an $8 million grant for the redevelopment project on Wednesday.
This rendering puts the potential of a newly renovated Forest Theater on display. Nonprofit Forest Forward is working to revitalize the theater also means the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Arts Academy is getting some love.The 75-year-old theater once featured notable acts like Tina Turner, B.B. King and Dallas’ own Erykah Badu. More recently, the site was vacant for 15 years before the nonprofit Forest Forward acquired the property on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in 2017.
The grant will pick up some of the costs, with $7 million coming from the city’s Infrastructure Investment Fund, a 2023 initiative targeting development in underserved areas, according to officials. The other million will come from the Public Private Partnership fund, documents show.Elizabeth Wattley, the president and CEO of Forest Forward, thanked city leaders for their support of bringing “the shiny, bright lights back to sunny South Dallas.
