Armed with a walking stick, a chair and a quilt, Virginia Hanley is ready for battle. Nobody is getting in between her and her tree, and we're here for it 🌳
The 70-year-old has embarked on a sit-in protest to save a towering willow tree from getting the chop. The 61-year-old tree is due to be felled due to subsidence issues at a property on the street.Virginia was left distraught when she saw workers approach the tree, and rushed over to stage her protest.‘They explained they were taking it down with permission from Swale Borough Council and that it would be gone in four hours.
The act of defiance was no easy feat, as the mum-of-two was left living with a disability following a road accident in 1984. She added: ‘While I was under the tree the workers told me they couldn’t wait while I was there because it was costing them money.‘So they left and they promised me they wouldn’t be back. But 15 minutes later, they were. However, not everyone agreed with her protest. Virgina’s neighbour, who has lived in his home for 25 years, was happy for the tree to go.
