The 2022 Grammys awards show has been postponed because of a surge in COVID 19 cases, the Recording Academy and CBS said Wednesday in a joint statement.
“Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon,” the statement said.
The show was scheduled to be held in the 7,100-seat Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Health authorities in the city are reporting a high number of new COVID cases. The Grammys was postponed last year because of COVID concerns. The 2021 show was moved from late January to March 14 and had a mixture of live and pre-recorded performances for a limited-size crowd,Another big entertainment event, the Sundance Film Festival, announced Wednesday that it’s canceling all in-person events for the festival in Park City, UT. It was scheduled to start later this month.
“While it is a deep loss to not have the in-person experience in Utah, we do not believe it is safe nor feasible to gather thousands of artists, audiences, employees, volunteers, and partners from around the world, for an eleven-day festival while overwhelmed communities are already struggling to provide essential services,” the festival said in“This was a difficult decision to make. As a nonprofit, our Sundance spirit is in making something work against the odds.
