The trial includes 50 varieties of oat, 130 varieties of barley, 60 varieties of spring wheat and 3 varieties of canola.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska already produces some cereal grains in-state, but researchers, farmers and brewers recognize there’s room for growth.

Hasan said the trial includes 50 varieties of oat, 130 varieties of barley, 60 varieties of spring wheat and 3 varieties of canola. “On the other hand, for the malt industry, you need a grain that has less protein, so then there’s more starch for alcohol production,” he said. But Hasan said modern techniques have cut down the wait time by about half. Similar breeding efforts, he said, used to take six to 10 years.

“There’s not a lot of wheat grown here, and the reason is because our season is short,” Alaska Flour Company Co-Founder Bryce Wrigley said in a Thursday phone interview. But he said if the Small Grains Project can come up with a reliable, quality wheat cultivar that’s ready for combining within 100 days after planting, that could foment change.

Big Delta Brewing Founder Ken Greenleaf told Newscenter Fairbanks that most barley Alaska brewers use in beer production is shipped up from the Lower 48.
