At her confirmation hearing, Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett said neither her Catholic faith nor her family's gun ownership would unfairly influence her evaluation of cases involving abortion or guns
Sen. Lindsey Graham then goes immediately to lightning-rod issues: abortion, religion and guns.
He states he has a bill that would ban abortion at 20 weeks of pregnancy—the point at which pregnant women receive an ultrasound that can identify abnormalities and possibly genetic disorders. He says that some states have already enacted versions of his abortion-ban measure, and asks Judge Barrett, an antiabortion Catholic, if she would be able to fairly evaluate any cases challenging those laws.Mr. Graham then turns to guns, and asks the judge if she owns a gun.
Judge Barrett has cast dissenting votes indicating that she is at a minimum skeptical of the broad abortion rights established under Roe v. Wade, and another dissenting vote in which she opposed a categorical ban on gun ownership by felons.
