It was bound to happen: Coach Prime finally submitted his first recruiting dud. His name is Pat Shurmur, and as the Grading the Week staff can attest, he's hardly a harbinger of football excitement.

His name is Pat Shurmur, and as the Grading the Week staff can attest, he’s hardly a harbinger of football excitement. If Deion Sanders was looking for someone well-versed in drawing up third-and-long plays that result in pass-catchers receiving the ball three yards short of the sticks, we’ve got good news: The Buffs found their man!

The former Broncos offensive coordinator was a master of such play design during his two years working under Vic Fangio in Denver — in addition to long, high-wire-act drives that required multiple fourth-down conversions.as an analyst, it’s that he’s far enough down the totem poll that he won’t be calling the shots for the Buffs offense.Well, a grand total of one offense directed by Shurmur has finished in the top 10 in scoring in the NFL … over nine seasons … out of 32 teams.

It worked out for Bruce Brown, who’s about to get paid three times more than he made last season after riding the Joker’s wake to a career year. Shoot, it even worked out for 36-year-old Jeff Green, who received a two-year, $16 million deal from Houston after winning his first ring with the Nuggets. So why were undervalued vets like Eric Gordon, Taurean Prince and Yuta Watanabe compelled to sign elsewhere for short deals and small money? Did the Nuggets even go after free agents like that? For now, that will remain a mystery.

This much we do know: Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth’s last two weeks have been just so-so in terms of establishing depth.
