The Toyota GR Corolla will share its 1.6-litre three-cylinder with the GR Yaris and takes direct aim at Volkswagen's Golf GTI, but there’s a catch…
It’s expected that a six-speed manual transmission will be standard fit, but Gazoo Racing is publicly known to be developing a new fast-shifting eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission designed for its products. The new gearbox has already been revealed by Toyota in a GR Yaris development car, quashing rumours that Toyota’s more common CVT or a new dual-clutch would be made available.
What we do know, however, is that the Corolla will do without the extensive bespoke manufacturing and engineering that went into the GR Yaris that came as part of its homologation process. It’ll share the basic body-in-white of the standard Corolla and only feature bespoke bumpers and wheels, and as now confirmed in the released teaser, new front wings.
