KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) hopes newly-appointed Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will act fairly towards Sarawak and understand the needs of its people, says a state leader.

"Sarawak's special position as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Federal Constitution must be observed and respected," Assistant Minister of Corporate Affairs Abdullah Saidol said.

Abdullah, who is also PBB assistant secretary-general, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had made it clear that Sarawak's rights and interests would not be compromised in the final decision on who GPS would support as prime minister. "The task and consideration undertaken by the Chief Minister towards the final decision is not easy. Consultation with other party leaders in GPS is frequently done.
