It has been revealed a website which taxpayers forked out $24 million for to allow Australians to compare costs of medical procedures has barely been used.
A taxpayer-funded"medical costs transparency" website launched under the former Coalition government has come under the microscope after revelations the $24 million platform is barely used by doctors.
However, a Senate Estimates hearing on Thursday was told only 20 doctors have voluntarily listed their fees on the website. Health Resourcing Group Deputy Secretary Penny Shakespeare told him higher out-of-pocket costs were due to prices set by individual surgeons. “Ms Shakespeare, you just told me people can go to the website and see the different fees and make their mind up and now you tell me your website has 20 doctors in Australia with their fees,” Mr Pocock said, as first reported by The Guardian.
When Mr Kelleher said 640,000 people had visited the website, Mr Pocock replied “the vast majority” of people who visit are “bitterly disappointed”.
