Students will be able to work and earn more this summer and still qualify for third-level grants, under plans being considered by Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris
Mr Harris is working on proposals to allow students work longer hours in an effort to address staffing shortages in several areas of the economy. However, this amount could possibly be increased to €6,500.
The earning limit is in place to prevent students working excessive hours which could negatively affect their third-level education. Mr Harris said both he and Tánaiste Leo Varadkar have met businesses across the country concerned about a severe shortage of staff.Discussions are also taking place between Mr Harris and student representatives ahead of finalising the revised earning limit.
