Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced Friday that there will not be another special session, blaming the majority of “depriv(ing) Alaskan student of better educational opportunities,” his press release is titled.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - As Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced Friday there will not be another special session , he blamed a majority of lawmakers in a press release for not moving forward on his special session education agenda, saying they were “depriv Alaskan students of better educational opportunities.

” “It is disappointing that the Legislature did not take up the education items that were placed on the call,” the governor’s “The only result produced from this special session was additional money being appropriated to education with no expectations, no accountability and no measurable outcomes required. That is not reform. That is not leadership. That is not what Alaska’s children deserve,” the statement goes onto say. The governor called for a Special Session on July 2, with the session beginning Aug. 2. It is currently ongoing. “We wish the majority had used this current special session to pursue reforms since Alaska families want better results,” House Minority Leader Mia Costello, R-Anchorage, said in a text message Wednesday, before the governor published his letter. “The Republican caucus is ready to pass meaningful reform and will be willing to continue to work on that.”“We have an education task force that’s meeting right now,” Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, told Alaska’s News Source Wednesday. “That was the subject of legislation that was just overridden I can tell you that education policy, in speaking with other legislators, Republicans and Democrats, will be a focus of next session.” The special session was set to end on Sept. 2, but after Matt Simpson, Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, delivered the calendar for the meeting on Aug. 31, he said the legislature would not reconvene. “A floor session can be cancelled at the discretion of the presiding officer,” Simpson said in an email. “Normally when a floor session is cancelled it means the body will convene at 10 a.m. the following day per. Since this will be the last day of the special session it means the special session will expire at midnight on 9/1 and the Senate will be adjourned to January 2026."hang over the session, all drafted by the governor over his definition of education reform. So too does his executive order creating a Department of Agriculture, which seemsSen. Löki Tobin, D-Anchorage, told Alaska’s News Source Monday. Members of both the majority and minority have previously said the bills had merit and deserved discussion. “They’ve already begun the vetting process and I expect that they will continue to move forward in the second session of the 34th legislature,” she said. “Right now, what we are trying to evaluate is how those pieces of legislation might impact or influence how we fund our public schools.” “I don’t think there’s a will to come back to special session and have committee meetings,” Sen. Mike Cronk, R-Tok/Northway, also said Monday. “I would hope that the majorities bring those up in their committees, because I do think they’re good bills. Are they perfect? Probably not, but there’s no perfect bill. But I think they’re worthy of the discussion.”
