The federal government has moved to remove some of the disincentives facing people on income support who want to join or rejoin the workforce.

Pensioners wishing to return to the workforce will be able to do so with far less fear of losing access to their income support under two key changes made by the federal government as part of its new employment white paper.

At the same time, the nil rate period will be doubled from six to 12 fortnights, meaning any income support recipients, including those on JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and the pension, will have twice as much time of receiving income from a job before they lose access to their government support.Treasurer Jim Chalmers has unveiled two key changes to government income support in a plan to bolster the workforce.

Existing and new recipients will also retain the current elevated maximum work bonus balance limit of $11,800 rather than $7800. "So what this extension will do is allow someone to take up short-term work and still remain part of the income support system, allowing a smoother transition, to allow a person to take up short-term work and not feel there is a disincentive if that work does not continue."Amanda Rishworth said the change to the nil period would remove disincentives associated with getting into work.Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the policy would help improve the workforce.
