A Columbus-based commercial interior design firm, GOFS Commercial Interiors, faces severe financial strain due to the ongoing government shutdown, with 80% of its work tied to federal contracts now on hold. The owner details the negative impacts of paused contracts, halted expansion plans, and the overall instability hindering business operations.
As the government shutdown reaches its one-month milestone, its impact is being felt in many corners across the country, from SNAP pauses, federal furloughs, and unpaid wages. Businesses are pained due to the shutdown as well.
One of those businesses is GOFS Commercial Interiors, a Columbus-based commercial interior design firm. GOFS owner and president Haleema Shafeek said 80% of the work the business does is through federal government contracts, now on hold due to the government shutdown. "If this 80% stays on pause, I would say the next month it really could be detrimental to our business," Shafeek said. The shutdown started the day a five-year contract renewal was meant to take place, leaving it in limbo, forcing Shafeek from a planned expansion to six employees and hundreds of contractors to the two employees she has today. "When you've gone down a path and you have a growth plan and you have employees and you have a community depending on you, it's a little bit bigger than just me starting things on my own," she said. "It's a responsibility that you feel you might not be able to uphold." She adds that a business can not expand in instability, especially when they’re just trying to stay afloat. Shafeek is currently mulling over options for the future of her business if the shutdown continues, but is facing obstacles due to the instability the shutdown has caused. "How do I go to my banker and say, I'm going to be able to take out a new loan and I don't know when this contract's going to take off?" she questioned.Shafeek calls the problem two-fold: government contracts on pause, with the future of them on hold, as well as corporate businesses tightening their wallets, not expanding in an unstable market. For them, it may be a wise business decision, but for Shafeek, it means she can’t compensate for the lack of federal contract money. A military veteran, Shafeek is someone who served the country; she is disillusioned with the state of the shutdown. “It's a bit of a shocker when our government shuts down. And it's even more of a shocker, I think, when our government shuts down, but there's no end in sight." The impact of the shutdown extends beyond GOFS, affecting businesses throughout the region. Rhonda Peterson, president of the National Association of Women Business Owners Columbus, noted, "The shutdown is probably one of the bigger challenges that we've seen. It's something where our members are looking for how are you dealing with it, how are you dealing with it?’" Peterson noted that it’s not just businesses that have federal contracts or are in need of loans that are affected, but the greater economy as a whole, with fewer shoppers hitting all businesses. For now, Shafeek and other business owners are adapting to survive, hoping for a resolution that will allow them to return to normal operations.Downtown Columbus museum severely damaged after gas leak, explosionFruit sold in Kroger, other stores nationwide recalled due to potential contamination Moonlight Companies has issued a nationwide recall of yellow and white peaches due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the FDA.One person was killed in a crash involving a semi and an SUV near the Gemini Place ramp on I-71 southbound early Tuesday morning.A 21-year-old man is dead after an early morning stabbing near Ohio State’s campus in the University District.
