A government-led rescue operation in Stilfontein, North West, has successfully retrieved 26 illegal miners from a disused mine shaft. Two bodies were also recovered. The operation, which began on Monday, is ongoing, and the Ministries of Police and Mineral Resources and Energy are expected to visit the site on Tuesday to monitor the progress.

Twenty-six illegal mineworkers were retrieved from a disused mine shaft in Stilfontein, North West, during the first day of the official rescue operation. According to Mametlwe Sebei, representing Lawyers for Human Rights, two bodies were also brought up from underground. Meanwhile, the Ministries of Police and Mineral Resources and Energy are expected to visit Stilfontein near Klerksdorp on Tuesday.

This follows a government-led rescue operation, which commenced on Monday, and is anticipated to continue. The purpose of the visit is to monitor the progress of the rescue efforts aimed at ensuring the safe resurfacing of all illegal miners trapped underground. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) earlier stated that they, in collaboration with the minerals council, will be funding the retrieval operation, which is projected to cost R12 million. This funding commitment is contingent upon the Constitutional Court's ruling on the responsibility for the operation, whether it falls to the government or the owners of the disused mine, Buffelsfontein Gold. The rescue effort was initially launched by the community in October of the previous year to retrieve illegal miners from underground. The community successfully retrieved 35 illegal miners and 10 bodies. In total, 1,570 illegal miners have resurfaced at Margaret Shaft and Shaft 10 in Stilfontein
