Former Labor MP Graham Richardson says the Labor government has done a “number of things wrong” on the Qatar Airways dilemma. The government recently blocked Qatar Airways’ request for additional flights into Australia - one of its reasons for the decision relating to the strip search incident involving 13 Australian women at an airport in Doha. “The first one is getting involved to try and stop this at all,” Mr Richardson told Sky News Australia. “Because I think the more airlines come in, the more seats there are, the cheaper seats get. “The mob out there, they don’t care whether it’s Qatar or any other airline, they want a cheap seat.”

A whole litany of reasons have been put forward as to why Qatar Airways was blocked from running an additional 28 flights into Australia’s four major airports. Those include the 2020 incident at Al Hamad Airport where Australians were invasively strip-searched as well as the desire to protect Australian jobs. However, the argument being honed in by the government today involves the suggestion that Qatar is currently not operating to its available capacity in Australia. It’s currently approved to run 28 return flights every week to Australia’s four major airports; Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth; they wanted an additional 28 flights but were declined in July.
