The government of national unity ( GNU ) remains divided over the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Act ahead of a deadline related to two controversial clauses. President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Act into law but suspended its implementation pending consultations. Clause 4 gives the Department of Basic Education more authority over admission policies, and Clause 5 requires school governing bodies to seek approval for their language policies from provincial heads of department.
