South Africa’s consolidated fiscal deficit is projected at 4.2% of the gross domestic product for 2022/23 and will go down to 3.2% in 2025/26, including government’s partial takeover of Eskom’s R337 billion debt.
Mainly due to this Eskom debt relief, he said, government’s debt would stabilise at a higher level of 73.6% of GDP in 2025/26.Godongwana said: Godongwana said that the lack of reliable electricity supply was the biggest economic constraint. Due to Eskom’s inefficiencies and shortcomings, record levels of load shedding were experienced in 2022. “In response, we are acting decisively to bring additional capacity onto the grid. We are also working to transform the electricity sector to achieve energy security in the long term.”
