The PA Student Teacher Support Program was designed to help combat teacher shortages across the Commonwealth by providing a solution to the financial strain caused by unpaid student teaching requirements.

In Pennsylvania, prospective teachers are required to complete at least twelve weeks of student teaching before leading a classroom on their own. “The goal is for you to get used to the full teaching load, so after like one or two weeks they really want you to just fully step into it and embrace your responsibilities,” explained Ashley Brasefield, who is a student teacher at Philipsburg Middle School. Although they’re working five days a week in the classroom during this period, the vast majority of student teaching positions are unpaid, which can be financially difficult. “We may need to pay for rent, or just your everyday living, so that can be kind of off-putting to be like, ‘Ok, I’m stepping into this 35-plus hour a week almost job, and I’m not getting paid a cent for any of it.’” The student teacher support program began in 2024 and offers applicants a ten thousand dollar stipend on a first come, first serve basis to help cover their unpaid time. It started as a ten million dollar program and has since grown to thirty million dollars for this academic year. “You still have to lesson plan every day, you still have to interact with students on a day-to-day basis, you still have to do a lot of the things that teachers do that they get paid for but without getting paid. So, I think the stipend helps them to not have to worry about, "Oh, I have to lesson plan for an hour and then I gotta go teach and then I gotta work after school,’” says Cameron Aungst, a Park Forest Middle School teacher. According to the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, this program has already helped over four thousand student teachers and received over seven thousand applicants in total. The end goal in offering this financial support is to eventually reduce the severe teacher shortage that Pennsylvania faces today. As demand for the support program increases, Governor Josh Shapiro has proposed a five million dollar increase in funds. As of right now, it is unclear whether or not that five million dollars will be added to the stipend program in the next state budget.Officials: Two locomotives, over a dozen railcars derail near historic Horseshoe Curve LOGAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Seventeen empty train cars derailed Saturday morning near the historic Horseshoe Curve in Logan Township, Blair County, according to countThe Cecil County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a driver who nearly struck children who were boarding a school bus WednesdayOrganizations and family across the Commonwealth are honoring Pennsylvania State Police Corporal Timothy O'Connor, who died in the line of duty Sunday night.REAA Pennsylvania State Police trooper was killed in the line of duty Sunday night. The PA Department of Environmental Protection issued administrative orders Thursday to PA townships where DHS recently purchased detention centers. The orders, s
