Gov. Josh Shapiro and Lt. Gov Austin Davis have been referencing their division over football loyalties, which will come to a head this Sunday.

Even for those Pennsylvanians who know nothing about the sport , it’s hard to miss the fact that Pennsylvania’s two NFL franchises will face each other this Sunday – providing an ample opportunity for the commonwealth’s political leadership to drum up a little hometown spirit.

“However, we don’t always agree on everything, and this Sunday our biggest disagreement will be on full display as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Philadelphia Eagles,” Davis said to a mixture of laughs and groans from the crowd, “and we finally learn once and for all that the Pittsburgh Steelers are the premier NFL team here in Pennsylvania.”“In this season of peace and joy and togetherness, the lieutenant governor had to go there? Come on,” Shapiro said.

An upset victory within two weeks of an election resulted in a 1.6 percentage point increase on average for the incumbent, after adjusting for other voting trends. For the most heavily attended games, gains grew to an average of 2.4 points. “I am a fanatic when it comes to sports, and you cannot bull**** your way through sports. You have to be loyal to the teams you like, and frankly, Yinzers may not be happy with me on Sunday, but I think they respect the fact that you stay true to yourself and honest about your allegiances,” Shapiro said.
