“Tropical Storm Ian is forecasted to become a major hurricane before making landfall along Florida’s West Coast,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis on Friday night asked for a"federal pre-landfall emergency declaration" to make key resources and support available to the state from the federal government. It requires the approval of President Biden.
The governor's emergency order means members of the Florida National Guard will be activated and on standby. White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters late Friday that Biden administration officials are closely monitoring the storm forecast with the National Hurricane Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“We will continue to maintain a forward-leaning posture throughout the remainder of this hurricane season,” she added during her daily briefing with White House reporters.
