Murphy said he will meet with both First Lady Jill Biden and U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.
The trip comes amid questions over whether Murphy will signfor reaching candidates that education officials say is adding to the shortage in the classroom.
“It’s a calling,” he added later about teaching, noting his sister is a retired Boston teacher. “It’s not just a job. We’ll do everything we can to keep the pipeline full.”“I don’t have a number for you off the top of my head,” he said after Tuesday’s event. “We’re gonna do a pretty deep dive this afternoon.”
The governor said he has “no news” to make on the proposal, noting “we don’t do that unless we’ve made a final decision.”“But we’re trying to figure out a good landing place,” Murphy said Tuesday night during his call-in radio show onThe office of state Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, D-Essex, one of the bill’s sponsors, told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday that Murphy is expected to issue a conditional veto of the proposal and ask the state Legislature to pass changes to it.
Steven Baker, a spokesman for the New Jersey Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union, noted that it has been nine weeks since the Legislature passed the bill.
