With Labor Day marking the traditional start of campaign season, DeWine has a significant lead in independent polls; a huge fundraising advantage and is running as a well-known incumbent in a state that has shifted to the political right in recent years.
Whaley, a staunch supporter of abortion rights and the first woman ever to win a major-party nomination for Ohio governor, stands to gain from voters upset by the Supreme Court ruling and Ohio’s new abortion restrictions.
Tom Sutton, a political scientist at Baldwin Wallace University, said he believes women will be a “driving force” in this year’s election, though he said it’s not yet clear exactly how big that force will be. “I think a lot of this will come down to, do women who in the past have actually felt pretty good about Mike DeWine as a governor because he didn’t feel like an extremist to them ... do those women now see him as a governor who has pushed through extreme policies on everything from abortion to guns?” Pepper said.
“It’s very hard when you’re when you’re from a local-level to get known versus someone who’s literally had decades to work every county fair, every quarter of that state,” Pepper said. “...He’s getting a huge advantage. You’re visiting a county for the third time – he’s in that county for the 100th time.”
