Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday that if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, Attorney General Dave Yost will ask a federal judge to stop blocking a state law effectively banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

adds a new dimension to this year’s governor’s race between the 75-year-old DeWine -- who has been staunchly anti-abortion for decades -- and 46-year-old Democratic nominee Nan Whaley, the first woman ever to win a major-party nomination for Ohio governor and a consistent supporter of abortion rights.on the so-called “heartbeat bill,” passed by the GOP-dominated legislature in 2019.

However, the governor wants to see what the actual Supreme Court ruling says before enacting new legislation, Tierney said Wednesday morning. The “first step,” Tierney added, would be to lift the court’s stay on the heartbeat bill. “For 40 years, I have voted on abortion initiatives,” he said. “I believe we have an obligation to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. And that is what I’ve told people, that’s what I’ve done, I will continue to do that.”

Even before the leak, Whaley made abortion rights an issue in her primary race against ex-Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, who began his political career opposing abortion but later switched his stance.during her second debate with Cranley
