Republicans are trying to figure out their next steps after a federal judge blocked the law last weekend.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine says there’s a simple way state legislators can deal with a ruling from a federal judge over the weekend thatDeWine told reporters this week that U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson’s ruling didn’t seem to take issue with the broader bill, which he signed into law this summer. Instead Watson specifically cited a section that includes permanent lawful residents, also known as green-card holders in the ban.

Republican lawmakers passed the new law in June during a special legislative session DeWine called. They took up the measure after left-leaning groups spent millions bankrolling last year’s campaign to pass the abortion-rights amendment in November, and as the same groups prepared to fund this year’s Issue 1, a redistricting-reform amendment that could threaten the GOP’s historic supermajority in the state legislature.

Just before passing it, Republican legislators included green-card holders in the ban. A few Republicans, including state Rep. Bill Seitz of Cincinnati, predicted doing so would cause the bill to be struck down in court. He said U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, then a federal district court judge, wroteThat’s exactly what Watson, who was appointed in 2004 by then-President George W. Bush, ended up citing in a weekend ruling that blocks the law from taking effect.
