Though Gov. Mike DeWine ducked a question about whether Ohio has been chosen as the site of a major new computer-chip factory planned for the Columbus area, he said Tuesday that he'd love for the state to get one.

, DeWine said he’d love for Ohio to get one, and called for Congress to pass a bill that would direct $52 billion for domestic semiconductor production which has cleared the Senate with bipartisan support but stalled before the Democratic-controlled House.

“There’s nothing more important as far as things that we make then chips, and I think it’s been driven home to people. The average person when they go to buy a car and they tell them we don’t have that model, or it’s a six-month wait. And why is that? It’s because the car manufacturer doesn’t have chips,” said DeWine, a Republican.

Officials in New Albany, the Columbus suburb that’s performing the annexation, in DeWine’s office and at JobsOhio, the state’s private economic-development arm, all declined to comment. Any deal for a semi-conductor plant likely would involve significant tax subsidies – Texas officials have earmarked $27 million for a new $18 billion Samsung chip plant announced in December.
