A project three years in the making is finally complete and everyone was invited on Thursday to celebrate.
) - The USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park held a ceremony Thursday morning to celebrate the completion of the teak deck replacement project and Gov. Kay Ivey made an appearance.
A project three years in the making is finally complete. After 80 years of wear forced the USS Battleship’s main deck to be replaced, the new deck was installed.“Our dream was to take care of this deck. We watched it deteriorate. By the way, we’ve had about 6 million people on the deck since we opened up the park. So, you consider all of that wear and tear that it experienced during the war. So, it was a great dream,” Chairman, W. Terrance Ankerson said.
And it was such an honor for the state, they contributed to the construction that finished months ahead of schedule. “Our only funds come through the gate out there. We don’t get state appropriations. The good news is that with this project, we were able to get some special state funds to help us get this done,” Ankerson said.
After the ceremony and ribbon cutting, all visitors received 50% off their admission tickets in celebration.
