The change is in the section where she says the two major political parties, the republican and democratic parties, should certify their candidates using the 2024 court-drawn map by Tuesday, June 2 at 5 p.m. The extension for qualifying is in case Alabama is told that it is not allowed to use the 2023 legislature-approved map. Alabama is still waiting on the Supreme Court to decide on whether the state can use its 2023 legislature-approved map.
Attorney General Steve Marshall requested the Supreme Court justices come to a decision by June 1. However, a decision was not announced from the Supreme Court justices as of the morning of June 2. The proclamation goes on to say that if the state is given permission to use the 2023 map, candidates will officially qualify in the districts that were certified by the Secretary of State’s office on May 26.
In the updated proclamation, she cites the May 26 decision by a federal court as the reason for the updated proclamation. The decision by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals blocked Alabama from using its 2023 legislature-approved congressional map. Gov. Kay Ivey updated the proclamation for a special primary election, which is still scheduled for August 11.
