Passing education savings accounts, or ESAs, is a priority for Gov. Greg Abbott.

Greg Abbott’s push for education savings account plan that would let parents use state dollars for their child’s private education — The majority do, according to a poll from the University of Houston and Texas Southern University released Monday.

Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed said they’d support school vouchers only for low-income parents, and 64% said they’d support education savings accounts for low-income parents only.The poll surveyed 2,257 Texas adults and has a 2.1 percentage points margin of error. The poll was conducted between June 20 and July 1.

Among Republicans, 73% support vouchers for all parents and 57% support them for only low-income parents. Seventy four percent supported education savings accounts for all parents and 58% supported education savings accounts for low-income parents only. Looking at Democrats, 55% support vouchers for all parents and 60% support vouchers for low-income parents only. Sixty-one percent supported education savings accounts for all parents and 67% supported education savings accounts for low-income parents only.Sixty-five percent of independents support vouchers for all parents and 58% support vouchers for low-income parents only. As for education savings accounts, 73% support them for all parents and 63% support them for low-income parents only.

The poll described education savings accounts as the creation of “a government funded bank account for parents who opt to not send their children to public schools, with restricted, but multiple uses for educational purposes. Acceptable uses include paying for private school tuition, tutoring, online education programs, therapies for students with special needs or other instructional materials.
