Gov. Greg Abbott calls for expansion of Texas State Parks system, on its 100-year anniversary

Gov. Greg Abbott called on state leaders to do more to preserve the Texas park system and add new parks for future generations, as the state struggles to keep up demand for them that grows with the population.

With about 10 million visitors a year, the parks can become overcrowded during peak seasons, especially at popular destinations where campsites are limited. “We hope the Legislature heeds the governor's call and makes a historic investment in expanding the state parks system,” he said. Alpin, co-founder and president of Lake Jackson-based Buc-ee’s convenience stores and a major campaign donor to Abbott,As part of that expansion effort, later this year the state will open its first new state park in North Texas in almost 25 years. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, 80 miles west of Fort Worth, will feature a 90-acre lake and 4,800 acres of hills, canyons and forests.

But even with the new park, a study by Texas Tech University showed the state needs to add more than a million acres to the park system by 2030 to stay ahead of the state's population growth.
