Three candidates vying to become Utah’s next governor debated the state's biggest issues during the gubernatorial debate at Salt Lake Community College Wednesda

Three candidates vying to become Utah ’s next governor debated the state's biggest issues during the gubernatorial debate at Salt Lake Community College Wednesday, hosted by the Utah Debate Commission. Three candidates vying to become Utah ’s next governor debated the state's biggest issues during the gubernatorial debate at Salt Lake Community College Wednesday, hosted by the Utah Debate Commission.

The 60-minute debate featured Republican Gov. Spencer Cox, Democratic Rep. Brian King, and Libertarian J. Robert Latham. Latham criticized the state’s duopoly political system, saying it doesn’t represent all Utahns and accused the legislature of being dominated by crony capitalism. “So many Utahns are fed up with what the two-party system has to offer. It’s not speaking to them; it’s not giving solutions to them,” Latham said. Democratic candidate Brian King argued that progress on issues like LGBTQ rights, education, homelessness, and affordable housing is being hindered by the Republican supermajority in the legislature. “As I’ve said, a monopoly on political power doesn’t result in good things for the state of Utah any more than a monopoly in economic power results in good things happening for Utahns,” King said. Several key issues, including homelessness, the Great Salt Lake and abortion, were not addressed during the debate.“What do we want to do in terms of the power of the state to get into our homes and to get into our doctors’ offices?” King said. Cox called the last four years the “golden age of Utah,” crediting decisions made decades ago for the state’s success.“It was decisions made 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 50 years ago that have helped to get us here, and it’s our job not to screw it up,” Cox said.“My biggest concern is that we will lose that golden age, and we will lose that if we don’t fix housing,” he said. When pressed on Amendment D, Cox expressed concern that too many initiatives would make it to the ballot and emphasized the need for voters to decide whether the legislature should have the power to amend them once passed.
