Taberon Honie appears before the Utah Board of Pardons & Parole on Monday, July 22, 2024, for the first day of his commutation hearing, which continues Tuesday. He is currently scheduled die by lethal injection Aug. 8, unless the Utah BOP decides otherwise. Previously, Honie 's attorneys sent a two-page letter to Cox as a push to temporarily stop his execution, scheduled for Thursday just after midnight.
In the letter, Cox said that after evaluating the concerns and facts surrounding the case, his review "indicates that a temporary reprieve is not warranted." "Indeed, it is not clear to me that any benefit would come from delaying Mr. Honie's sentence further," Cox said. In making his decision, Cox said he is mindful of the fact that Honie "has had every opportunity to challenge his sentence since it was imposed 25 years ago," in litigation and before the Board of Pardons and Parole.
Honie exhausted his appeals before the state courts. Additionally, Honie had a commutation hearing before the Board of Pardons and Parole, who declined to commute his sentence.
