Gov. Greg Abbott said Wednesday that Texas' electric grid will be able to withstand freezing weather that will begin sweeping over the state on Thursday.

The natural gas power plants built between 1958 and 1968 at NRG’s WA Parish power plant on Friday, Oct. 14, 2022 in Richmond.Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday told Texans that the state, and its beleaguered electrical grid, are prepared for freezing weather forecast to sweep over the state on Thursday and remain parked until after Christmas.

"One thing that we do know is with the ultra cold temperatures for several days, there are many people in the state of Texas who may be concerned about the power grid," he said."But we expect the grid to remain up and running very robustly during this very cold snap." In San Antonio, wind-chill temperatures could reach 4 degrees on Friday morning, but temperatures are expected to rise above freezing that day and during daytime hours on Saturday before dipping back into the teens and upper 20s at night. While these will be some of the coldest sustained temperatures since 2021, David Kinchen, chief operating office for Energy Ogre, said several factors will make this storm less severe.

However, the strong winds associated with this storm could lead to localized power outages due to falling branches and downed power lines, Public Utility Commission Chairman Peter Lake said at the press conference Wednesday.
