PARMA , Ohio -- Going into the winter season, Parma Service Director Tony Vannello purchased 13,000 tons of rock salt from Cargill . Unfortunately, the state-contracted supplier for Cuyahoga County has been playing catch-up all season with Parma one of many Northeast Ohio communities dealing with a rock salt shortage.
“Receiving some orders has been slow going,” he said. “We have our large 5,000-ton salt dome that was filled at the beginning of the season. We did have some early snow events where we were getting shipments. “We probably received 6,000 tons already from our first three orders, and we have two more orders on hand for another 6,000 more tons since Jan. 5. We’ve only received 800 tons of that 6,000-ton order.” The solution for Parma’s service department workers is rationing rock salt usage while plowing streets.“We may come to a point where we spot salt the mains as well, but we’re gonna focus on the intersections and the hills -- trying to ration the salt that we have on hand.Parma’s main 5,500-ton salt dome is located at the Chevrolet Boulevard service garage, with a smaller secondary 500-ton structure at Nike Site Park. A possible solution to mitigate future salt shortages in the form of the city adding a third salt dome location was discussed last year with Parma officials dissuaded about what turned out to be an estimated $300,000 expenditure. Instead, using a $75,000 Ohio EPA Sodium Chloride Reduction Grant, the city repaired its main salt dome with a new Polyethylene skin and updated truss anchors. Recent events have the administration reconsidering the purchase of a new 5,000-ton salt dome, which would also be a more strategically-located facility, perhaps at Ridgewood Golf Course, to better serve the city’s hills located in the southeastern end of the community. “Having an additional dome, we’ll be able to store the lion’s share of what we would use for an entire winter season before the winter season even gets here,” said Vannello, who noted it would also somewhat take the guessing game out of how much salt would be needed going into the season. Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter added, “The service director and I had a discussion looking at that added dome. We’re starting budget hearings. That’s something that we’re definitely going to revisit. “That would keep us ahead of the curve going into next season, so I’m definitely going to take a hard look at that with City Council.” When it’s joked that as soon as the city pulls the trigger on a third dome, Mother Nature will provide Northeast Ohio with a few mild winters in a row, the mayor quipped, “Hey, that’s a trade-off I’ll take every day.”
