We spoke with Anthologist, the creator of the GossipGirl reboot, to discuss the show's new focus and the challenges of avoiding a 'Gossip Girl 2.0' while honoring the themes that spoke to fans the first time around.

SAHAI: Instagram is a big deal today, and consequently a big deal in the show. What do you think the original characters’ Instagrams accounts would have been like? SAFRAN: I think it’s more of a change in time. The original was very soapy, and there was a little bit of a heightened fairytale universe in the original. This one is more grounded and down to earth while also still being “twisty.” I also think this version is more HBO. When the first one premiered, it was the era ofwhich was very “rich people have problems too.” It was a fun thing to watch. And you wanted to watch them have as many problems as possible.
