Lena Byrd Miles, who was born in San Leandro, raised in Oakland and now lives in Antioch, performed national anthem before Golden State Warriors game.

The anthem served as a nice showcase for this vocal star, who has been receiving a good deal of attention recently for her debut album, “Brand New,” which was released in late 2022.

“It was scheduled to come out in 2020,” she says. “When the pandemic hit, it made us have to change a whole lot of stuff. But we got it done and it came out in 2022. So, we made it.” From that launching point, she’d join forces wither two younger sisters and form the gospel act known as the Byrd Sisters.

“I sang with him from until his passing,” Miles says of Hawkins, who died in 2018. “I was able to be under his tutelage and mentorship. He poured a lot of gems into me. He definitely helped coach me at times.”
