Senate President Matt Huffman is poised to become the next speaker of the state House of Representatives. The House Republican Caucus unanimously elected Huffman, who won his seat unopposed after facing term limits in the Senate, during a meeting Wednesday night. A full vote will occur in January and is expected to be less contentious than last year's vote, in which Republican Jason Stephens was selected after a vigorous fight that saw 22 GOP members side with Democrats. Stephens won his reelection bid but decided not to pursue the speakership.
“I want to thank the Republican members of the Ohio House for their vote of confidence,” said President Huffman. “It is time the Republican majority unites for the greater good of our neighborhoods across the state. I look forward to the new leadership teams from the House and Senate working together to make this the most effective and efficient Ohio General Assembly in decades.”
