House GOP leaders are seeking a backup plan after a bipartisan deal to avert a partial government shutdown on Friday was derailed by conservative opposition . The legislation drew ire from hardline conservatives in both the House and Senate, as well as Elon Musk, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee to co-chair his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
As Musk called for lawmakers who supported the bill to be ousted, Trump's presidential transition team issued a joint statement by Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance opposing the initial version of the deal. Members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus felt blindsided by what they perceived as unrelated policy provisions added to the bill in eleventh-hour negotiations. The bill, originally slated for a vote Wednesday afternoon, saw its planned late afternoon votes canceled. The 1,547-page bill extends fiscal year (FY) 2024 government funding levels, providing lawmakers more time to agree on funding the rest of FY 2025 before the Friday deadline. It's the second such extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), since FY 2024 ended on Sept. 30. Besides funding the government through March 14, the bill includes over $100 billion in disaster aid for Americans affected by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. It also features an additional $10 billion in economic relief for farmers and healthcare reform measures. The bill also includes a provision focused on revitalizing Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium and its surrounding campus. Johnson defended the deal on 'Fox & Friends' Wednesday morning.
