Letter to the Editor: Over the past year, Ohioans who voted overwhelmingly to amend the state Constitution to eliminate partisan gerrymandering found out how little our voice counts.
Here are some highlights of GOP leadership in Ohio over the last few years.
In 2018, the Republican speaker of the Ohio House, Cliff Rosenberger, resigned over corrupt dealings with the payday-lending industry. In 2020, Rosenberger’s successor, Larry Householder, was arrested for his role in the FirstEnergy bribery scandal. The other key player in the bribery scandal is Sam Randazzo, who was appointed head of the Public Utilities Commission by our Republican governor, Mike DeWine. FirstEnergy has admitted bribing Randazzo to secure passage of the now notorious House Bill 6. DeWine appointed Randazzo despite warnings from his staff about Randazzo’s suspicious relationship with FirstEnergy. FirstEnergy contributed over $1 million to DeWine’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign.
Over the past year, Ohioans who voted overwhelmingly to amend the state Constitution to eliminate partisan gerrymandering found out how little our voice counts. The five top Republican officeholders, including DeWine, ignored our demand for fairly-drawn districts, hiding behind disingenuous arguments over the meaning of the new amendments.
